Discover how we care for our olive trees in July
In July, the growth of olive fruits slows down significantly, as the tree concentrates its energy on hardening the pit. This process, which marks a crucial stage of ripening, allows the fruit to become more resilient and ready for the next phase. Once this stage is complete, fruit growth will resume, but at a slower, steadier pace.
During this period, the olive tree also produces new shoots at the base of the trunk, known as suckers. These shoots must be promptly removed as they drain energy and resources from the main tree, slowing fruit development and weakening the plant as a whole.
Another key aspect we monitor closely is the presence of the olive fruit fly, a pest that lays its eggs inside the olives. Such an infestation can compromise the quality of the new harvest, causing irreversible damage to the fruit. For this reason, it is crucial to intervene promptly and continue monitoring the trees during their growth.
Despite its resilience and adaptability to the Mediterranean climate, the olive tree is not immune to particularly harsh weather conditions.
In periods of extreme and prolonged drought, the tree “self-protects” by dropping part of its fruit. This reaction is a survival mechanism that allows the plant to conserve vital resources, such as water, when winter reserves are no longer sufficient. Unfortunately, this phenomenon can reduce the quantity of olives available, but it helps the tree preserve its health and ensure survival even in challenging conditions.
To further limit the damage caused by drought and improve water management, as we also do in the vineyards, another key practice we adopt is mulching with shredded grass cover.
This technique, which consists of cutting and leaving grass and wild plants on the ground, creates a natural layer that reduces the evaporation of moisture from the soil. This way, the tree benefits from a more favorable microclimate, with less water loss, which is essential for its growth during the hottest and driest periods.
July, therefore, is a month of great care and attention for olive trees.
