Early sowing of pasture
Pasture Seeding at Podere Il Casale: a Story of Wheat, Sheep, and Biodiversity
Every year, between August and September, Podere Il Casale begins a fundamental phase of our organic farming: pasture seeding.
This is no ordinary sowing—it is done earlier than the classic winter sowing, carefully selecting evolutionary soft wheat, a special organic wheat produced at Podere Il Casale, naturally enriched with clover, a source of protein and a valuable ally for our pastures.
The beauty of this technique lies in its balance with nature: the sheep graze freely, feeding on weeds and keeping the wheat growth under control. In this way, the soil remains fertile, clean, and alive, without the need for chemical products.
The clover and grasses also form a natural carpet that hinders the growth of weeds, allowing our organic wheat to develop healthy and vigorous.
By the end of March or the beginning of April, the wheat is allowed to reach ear formation, completing its cycle until seed threshing.
During this period, a clover undersowing is also carried out, creating a natural layer on the soil. This impenetrable layer prevents the growth of weeds and supports the healthy development of Casale’s organic wheat.
Pasture seeding at Casale is not just an agricultural practice: it is a true sustainable life cycle, where every element—the evolutionary wheat, the clover, the sheep—works together to create a productive and nature-respecting ecosystem, ensuring high-quality organic wheat and vibrant, fertile pastures.
